If your computer is still running Windows 8.1, I am sure you will have seen the messages regarding “end of support”, but what does it actually mean? Well, the long and short of it is, as of the 10th January 2023, Windows 8.1 no longer receives security updates, software updates, or technical support for any issue from Microsoft. This includes no more updates for Chrome or Firefox. You could of course continue to use the computer, but this does leave you vulnerable to viruses and malware.
The Good News
The end of Windows 8.1 support, doesn’t necessarily mean the end of your computer. Depending on the age of the computer, and hardware specifications, it may be able to be upgrade to Windows 10. This could potentially give you another 2 ½ years use out of your computer, as long as none of your hardware fails.
In many cases we have found an SSD and RAM upgrade, also improves performance of the computer, and does work out to be more cost effective than purchasing a new one.
What if my computer won’t upgrade to Windows 10?
Well, you could opt for a different operating system altogether. I know that can sound a bit scary, but fear not! I have personally been using Ubuntu on my home computer for the past few years, and it is a joy to use. Not only is it simple, it has a free office package built-in, and because it isn’t resource hungry, it can breathe new life into an old computer, whether it be a desktop or laptop. Note: compatibility with software you are currently using will need to be checked.
We believe that anything that can prolong the life of a computer, is kinder to the environment and to your pocket. Year on year the throwaway society has been evolving, and if we can work around the “built-in obsolescence”, then we will. We will of course let you know if upgrading isn’t a feasible option.
